HASSIS (OR, THE TIFF AND THE PATCH-UP)
Edited with an Introduction, Notes and Glossary by Zisimos C. Synodinos
| Hassis, the character comedy in verse by the Zante-born poet Demetrios Gouzelis (1774-1843), is generally acknowledged to constitute one of the supreme achievements of the literature of the Ionian Islands, at the same time as it marks the beginning of the modern Greek theatre.
This youthful creation of an inquisitive and turbulent personality is a keen satire composed in the living local dialect of the time, replete with Venetian borrowings and with elements drawn from the island's own tradition of theatrical improvisation. It in turn exercised a considerable influence on the style and language of several other writers of the Ionian Islands.
For this critical edition, all extant sources have been consulted, with a view to producing a restored text free of the errors and imperfections affecting the now scarce early editions of the work. The text has been supplemented with an Introduction, a critical apparatus, Notes, a Glossary, etc., so as to help today's reading public become familiar with this notable product of the intellectual life of the Ionian Islands.
Zisimos H. Synodinos was born in Athens in 1958, but hails from Lixouri, Cephalonia. He studied law and history at the University of Athens and taught at the Ionian University. His work has been published in several academic and literary journals. He is currently employed at the Historical Archives of the National Bank of Greece. | | | | | | |
